There are a lot of beautiful cities in the world, they always say about capital cities how wonderful they are and how you have to see them. But let’s take a look at the bigger picture: there are many cities – well known ones – that are not dominated by parks, amazing old buildings and luxury hotels.

Here are the top 5 ugliest capital cities in the world; these are less attractive but nonetheless are they worth a visit for two reasons. On one hand you can see how people live in some places of the world, on the other hand your money – expressed very plainly – will help local economy.

Guatemala City, Guatemala

The country of Guatemala is otherwise rich in natural wonders and culture, but it’s capital, Guatemala City is very thronged, there is a lot of trash everywhere and many houses are old and on the verge of collapsing.

Mexico City, Mexico

Again, Mexico is a beautiful country but as far as Mexico City is concerned, it is said to be one of the most dangerous capitals in the world, it is also huge, really crowded and well… the raunchy neighborhoods really make it an ugly city.

Amman, Jordan

According to most tourists Amman, the capital of Jordan is very dirty, there is total chaos in the whole city, infrastructure is very under-developed and the concrete buildings – one on top of the other – are not too aesthetic either.

Caracas, Venezuela

Back in South America again, the Venezuelan capital, Caracas is full of slums, but apparently the ones designing the central part of the town did not have much concern for beauty either. Unfortunate, because here too, the country is full of natural wonders…

Chisinau, Moldova

Apparently the famously beautiful Europe has got it’s black sheep as well. Chisinau, the capital of Moldova is a real industrial city in ‘classical’ Soviet style. Blocks of flats made of concrete and out-of-use, broken down looking industrial areas dominate the city view – not so pretty!

Although as many as 3 South American cities have made it to the top 5 ugliest capitals list, don’t forget that there are many amazing places on the continent and even the countries that host these less attractive cities may have lots of beuties to offer for visitors.
